East Jazira Project Major-043
Ninewa Irrigation and drainage project. Irrigation by gravity from Mosul Lake. Open main canal. Max. discharge is 35 cubic meters/sec. Cropping intensity = 123$. Located on left side of Tigris River between the Tigris and the Greater Zab River. This project is considered as a strategic project which irrigates about 75000 ha gross area, and takes water by gravity from Mosul dam. Lake by feeder line canal is 81 km long including 2 tunnel with total length 4.5 km, three lined lateral canal with water coarses covering the area and there are three pumping lift station. On farm irrigation by solid set sprinkler machines, surface drainage applied in the project. The project is located on the left bank of the Tigris River in Hamdania and Mosul Qatha and include all land between Zabana Tigris river and extend to the north up to Kursabad up to Zagross mountain. Al Jazeera eastern irrigation project is one of the three parts of Al Jazeera irrigation project which takes its water from Al Mosul dam’s lake. The topography of the area is represented by its wavy land; therefore they depended on sprinkle irrigation (which is static system). A. The initial designs: The project comprised of a feeding canal with a length of 82, 1 KM, it extends from Al Mosul dam’s lake to Kebarly village in the south east of Al Mosul. There are many pumping stations on the subsidiary feeding canal in order to insure supplying the static systems of sprinkle irrigation with water. The project water intake is connected to Al Mosul dam’s lake with 2 tunnels, the first one is about 1, 9 KM length – there is hydroelectric station at its end in order to generate electricity because there is difference in the level between the back & the front of the tunnel. The second one is not far away from the 1st one and with a length of 1, 17 KM. B. A proposal for changing the initial designs: The proposal for changing initial designs depends on constructing a station or a group of stations on Tigris River and using underground water by digging water wells, and in this way we can dispense with the tunnels mentioned in the 1st design. $120,000,000 8/1/2008 1/31/2008
